Foreign Media: BMW Will Trial Humanoid Robots in German Factories to Counter Chinese Competition
German automotive giant BMW has announced that it plans to deploy two AI-driven humanoid robots for a pilot project in its factories this year. The robot, named "Aeon," was developed by the Swedish company Hexagon. It has a black and white color scheme, stands 1.65 meters tall, weighs 60 kilograms, and walks on two wheels.
The robot is equipped with 22 sensors and various cameras, enabling it to fully perceive its surroundings and autonomously operate and transport parts in pre-scanned and digitized factory spaces. The pilot phase will start this summer at the Leipzig factory, where the robot will work alongside human employees. Arno Robert, president of Hexagon's robot division, did not disclose the exact price but said that the price per unit is in the range of tens of thousands of euros.
This deployment comes against the backdrop of intensifying competition from Chinese automakers, as BMW seeks to improve production efficiency through automation.
