According to Yonhap News Agency and the Korea Economic Daily, local reports said that on April 11th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said that an unknown cause forest fire occurred in the demilitarized zone in the area of Goseong County, Gangwon Province, around 4:30 PM local time on the 10th.

The Forestry Service of South Korea dispatched two firefighting helicopters around the afternoon of the 10th to start extinguishing the fire, but retreated after sunset. At 6:30 AM on the 11th, the two helicopters were deployed again for firefighting.

On April 11th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said: "Before sending the Forestry Service helicopter, South Korea broadcasted to North Korea. So far, there has been no damage to South Korean military personnel and facilities, and the forest fire south of the military demarcation line is being successfully extinguished." The South Korean military also said that they are closely monitoring North Korea's movements and "maintaining a state of alert."

It was reported that the fire broke out in the northern part of this region and spread southward with the wind. Due to the fact that it is a forest fire in the demilitarized zone, personnel deployment is very difficult. Currently, the fire on South Korea's side has been completely extinguished, but the fire near the military demarcation line and on North Korea's side is still burning. The South Korean government plans to investigate the damage and other details immediately after the disaster ends.

In recent days, South Korea has experienced frequent forest fires. On March 21st, local time, the "largest forest fire in history" occurred in the southeastern part of South Korea, and it was not extinguished until March 31st. Statistics show that this forest fire caused 30 deaths, 45 injuries, and an area exceeding 48,000 hectares burned. In addition, more than 3,000 houses were destroyed, 30 national heritages and over 2,000 agricultural facilities were damaged.
