The "Russia" compressor station in the Krasnodar Territory, through which gas is transported to the "Turkish Stream" pipeline.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Gazprom has abandoned plans to establish a gas hub in Turkey.
Gazprom abandoned the idea of a Turkish hub because Turkey wanted to control the trading process and infrastructure constraints in the region limited gas supply capacity.
Bloomberg's sources said, "As Gazprom delved deeper into the details of Turkey's proposal, the company's interest gradually waned. Turkey plans to sell the gas delivered to the hub on its own, while Gazprom would only act as a supplier."
They revealed that Gazprom did not want others to have such control over the sale of its gas.
Meanwhile, a respondent pointed out that the transmission capacity of the pipelines from Turkey to Greece and Bulgaria was too limited to enable additional gas supplies to Europe.
The source said, "The transmission capacity of cross-border pipelines is constrained, undermining the prospects for establishing a full-scale Turkish hub with independent pricing indices."
According to Bloomberg, Gazprom management has already stopped discussing the Turkish hub plan in internal company meetings and discussions with government officials.
A Turkish source told Bloomberg, "Turkey's position on establishing a gas hub remains unchanged and it is still prepared to cooperate with Russia in a joint venture framework to advance this initiative."
It was reported that due to sanctions, counter-sanctions, and deliberate sabotage, Gazprom currently has only one route for exporting gas to Europe - via the European branch of the "Turkish Stream" pipeline. This project has been operating at over-design capacity for years.
