Ukrainian official statement: Strategic strikes on key targets inside Russia may be the path to ending drone attacks

On September 3, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Anti-Disinformation Center at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, posted on the Telegram social platform stating that the only viable way to curb Russia's drone attacks is to impose military pressure of equal intensity on critical targets within Russian territory.

Kovalenko emphasized that there is no "magic solution" achievable solely through technology to isolate Russian missiles and drones. While air defense systems are actively engaged in combat, the root of the threat lies deep inside Russia. Ukraine should proactively target the supporting infrastructure enabling Russia’s long-range drone operations, rather than merely intercepting incoming munitions after they enter Ukrainian airspace.

Kovalenko noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been continuously harassing Russian airports. As these strike operations continue, Russia’s domestic economy and civilian daily life will inevitably suffer. He also clarified that Ukraine does not intend to attack civil passenger aircraft; its military actions focus exclusively on military and war-support facilities. However, the ongoing drone warfare is increasingly raising flight risks in Russian civilian airspace.

Earlier this week, Pegasus Airlines from Turkey rerouted two flights bound for Russia and canceled multiple routes—prompted by warnings issued by Zelenskyy to airlines and insurance providers regarding airspace risks. Previously, Ukraine’s repeated long-range drone operations had already forced several Russian airports to temporarily shut down.

Kovalenko further predicted that as remote-controlled drone technology evolves, competition over satellite resources will intensify. The United States and China have already begun competing in space. In the future, a core mission of space-based combat forces will be to disable enemy satellites, thereby safeguarding ground facilities and personnel. Russia is also developing corresponding space confrontation capabilities. This technological race will directly impact Ukraine and European countries. He urged governments and the public to objectively recognize the limitations of air defense systems and acknowledge the evolving reality of drone warfare.
