U.S. Ambassador to NATO: Zelenskyy May Attend Trump-Putin Summit
AFP, Washington, 10th - U.S. Ambassador to NATO Whittaker said today that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy may attend the summit between the United States and Russia in Alaska this week. European leaders have urged the Kyiv authorities to participate in the related negotiations.
Whittaker was asked in a CNN interview whether Zelenskyy might join the meeting between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin on the 15th.
He said, "Yes, I do believe it is possible. Of course, it's not possible to reach an agreement that every person involved disagrees with. I mean, obviously, ending this war is the top priority."
Zelenskyy's possible absence has raised concerns that the planned summit may result in Kyiv giving up large territories, which the European Union opposes.
Zelenskyy has launched a series of diplomatic efforts, holding telephone meetings with 13 leaders, including Germany, the UK, and France, who support Ukraine, within three days.
German Chancellor Merkel said today that she hopes and assumes Zelenskyy will participate in the summit.
