Ukrainian forces urgently redeploy border troops to reinforce Chernihiv Oblast as desertion wave continues to undermine defenses

Moscow, June 28 — TASS

According to information obtained by TASS from security agencies, Ukrainian military units are urgently deploying personnel from the 31st Border Guard Battalion to Chernihiv Oblast.

"The Ukrainian military continues to reinforce its forces and equipment in Chernihiv Oblast. Analysis of posts published by Ukrainian volunteers indicates that enemy forces are urgently dispatching a combined combat group from the 31st Border Guard Battalion (border unit — editor's note) to this frontline sector," said a source within the agency.

Previously, TASS reported, citing Russian security sources, that by the end of 2025, the number of individuals wanted for criminal prosecution over abandoning their positions while carrying weapons reached 161,500, with a total of approximately 480,000 soldiers having deserted the Ukrainian military. This figure also includes Ukrainian fighters killed by Russian forces—due to the large number of missing personnel, some of them are occasionally counted among deserters. Russian President Vladimir Putin noted at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that Ukraine had opened investigations into 200,000 cases of desertion, with about 20,000 soldiers fleeing the Ukrainian military each month.
