Trump announced that starting August 1, tariffs of 35% will be imposed on Canadian goods
On July 10, US President Trump announced that starting August 1, tariffs of 35% will be imposed on goods imported from Canada. The industry-specific tariffs previously implemented will remain effective.
Trump released a tariff letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the social media platform "Truth Social": "Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a 35% tariff on goods exported from Canada to the United States... If Canada decides to raise tariffs for any reason, no matter how much you decide to raise them, we will add on top of the 35% tariff."
The US president added that if Canada cooperates with the US to prevent drugs such as fentanyl from crossing the border into the US, Washington will be prepared to adjust the tariff policy.
On July 7, Trump sent the first tariff letters to 14 countries, including Japan and South Korea, with tariff rates ranging from 25% to 40%. On the 9th, Trump sent letters to leaders of six countries, informing them that new tariffs would be imposed on goods exported to the US from these countries. In addition, on the same day, Trump also announced that starting August 1, a 50% tariff would be imposed on all Brazilian products.
