Japanese Media: U.S. Sanctions Against the International Criminal Court Draw Strong Opposition from Eight Countries

According to a report by Japan's Mainichi Shimbun on October 10, early on October 10, following the U.S. decision to impose sanctions on the core institutions of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs joined seven other nations—including the United Kingdom and France—in issuing a joint statement opposing the U.S. measures and calling for support of the ICC.

In the joint declaration by the eight countries, the signatories expressed support for the ICC’s independence and impartiality, and conveyed regret and strong opposition toward the U.S. sanctions. The statement warned that if implemented, the sanctions would have significant repercussions on the court’s operations, its staff, and their families.

The eight countries issuing the joint statement are Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
