[“The US Decides to Divert Missile Components Originally Intended for Ukraine to Middle East US Troops”]

On June 5, The Wall Street Journal reported that the US government decided to divert missile fuses originally planned to be provided to Ukraine to US troops in the Middle East. US Defense Secretary Austin issued this instruction via an internal memorandum in May.

These fuses are used for the "Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System" (APKWS) high-precision missiles. The US has been providing this technology to Ukraine for several years, and Ukraine has modified it into a land-based surface-to-air missile system to defend against Russian drones.

The Pentagon informed the Senate Armed Services Committee that this diversion is to address urgent needs identified by the Secretary of Defense. Former senior US defense official Celeste Wallander told the media that the APKWS system is crucial to maintaining Ukraine's multi-layered air defense system, but there is an urgent need to protect US personnel and bases in the Middle East from threats posed by Houthi forces and potential Iranian drones.

As a key military aid provider to Ukraine, the US suspended military assistance to Ukraine after Trump took over as president from Biden in March 2025. It later resumed the delivery of weapons approved by the previous administration. However, whether the Trump administration can maintain the aid scale during the Biden era remains uncertain.
