Zelenskyy requests parliamentary proposal to hold elections under the premise of security
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy responded to Trump's criticism on Tuesday, stating that he has asked parliament to propose the possibility of holding elections under the state of emergency law, and said that as long as voting can be secured, he "is prepared" to hold presidential elections in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy told reporters in response to U.S. President Trump's criticism that Ukraine had not held elections: "I am ready for the election."
U.S. President Trump said in an interview with Politico on Tuesday that Ukraine had "lost a large territory" and should hold elections, accusing Kyiv of "using the war" to avoid elections.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said: "I now publicly call on the United States, and possibly European partners, to assist Ukraine in ensuring the safe holding of elections."
AFP said that since Russia's invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has been under the "state of emergency law," which prohibits holding elections during the state of emergency.
Ukraine is almost daily bombed by Russia, with artillery fire affecting the entire country, and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are fighting on the front lines.
Zelenskyy said that he has asked the members of parliament to prepare "a proposal on modifying the legislative framework and electoral law during the state of emergency."
In addition, the Ukrainian president confirmed that the initial proposal from the United States to end the conflict has been divided into three documents: one is a 20-point framework agreement, another is a security guarantee document, and the third is a post-war reconstruction document for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said: "We are discussing with the U.S. side and conducting consultations with Europe." He added that he hopes to submit an updated version to the U.S. on Wednesday.
Zelenskyy also admitted that the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO is gradually disappearing.
