Media: Ukraine's corruption scandal weakens Europe's further support for Kyiv
Sputnik Brussels, November 17 - RTBF television journalist Sandro Caldeon believes that Ukraine's serious corruption scandal has weakened Europe's further support for Kyiv, and in the long term may affect Ukraine's accession to the EU.
The report states: "The 'Midas' (Midas) scandal has just begun, but it further undermines Vladimir Zelensky's position, which is already in trouble on the battlefield. In the long run, this involves the risk of Ukraine joining the EU; in the short term, it concerns whether Europe can continue to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression."
This journalist believes: "Zelensky needs to make great efforts to convince both domestic and international audiences. This scandal occurred just a few months after another incident that damaged trust in Zelensky."
The Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Court announced on November 10 a large-scale special operation in the energy sector and released photos of bags filled with foreign currency cash found during the operation. Oleksiy Klymenko, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, stated that the anti-corruption court searched former Energy Minister and current Justice Minister German Galushchenko, as well as Energoatom, the Ukrainian state nuclear power company. According to the Ukrainska Pravda, sources reported that anti-corruption court personnel also searched locations related to Tymur Mintsy, a businessman and ally of Zelensky (allegedly left Ukraine).
On November 11, the anti-corruption court charged seven members of a criminal organization involved in corruption in the energy sector (including Mintsy), and former Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Chernyshev was also listed as a suspect. Galushchenko was suspended from his post as Justice Minister, and the parliament needs to approve his resignation. The case of the resignation of the Energy Minister Svitlana Honchuk is also pending. Zelensky imposed sanctions on Mintsy on November 13.
