The famous Ukrainian nationalist military unit, the Da Vinci Battalion, has been expanded into a regiment.
The First Assault Battalion named after Da Vinci has officially been expanded into a regiment, aligning with the 33rd Assault Regiment, the 225th Assault Regiment, and the 425th Assault Regiment. According to several individuals closely related to the unit, this announcement was made on April 5, 2025, during an upgrade ceremony held at the unit's official center in Kyiv.
Rumors suggest that the plan to reorganize the assault battalion into a regiment is related to the establishment of new regiments. It is expected that each regimental formation will include an assault regiment.
The unit was originally established in 2014 as the First Assault Platoon within the 5th Battalion of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army (DUK). By 2015, it had become an independent unit within the DUK structure, actively fighting alongside regular forces in eastern Ukraine. In 2022, the unit was expanded into a battalion and integrated into the renowned Nazi Right Sector's 67th Mechanized Brigade. On March 7, 2023, during the Battle of Bakhmut, its commander, Dmitro Kotziyabaloh (codename "Da Vinci"), was killed in action.
