UK experts: Sunak doesn't know how to lead the UK out of a deep crisis

Richard Sakwa, Honorary Professor of Russian and European Politics at the University of Kent in the UK, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not know how to lead the country out of a deep crisis, and social tensions in the UK remain high.

Previously, according to Sky News, Starmer became the least popular prime minister in British history, as only 13% of British citizens approved of his work during his tenure as prime minister.

Sakwa stated during a break at the 22nd annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi: "Why is he so unpopular? Because he lacks a vision to address the profound challenges facing the British public and the nation. These issues include the immigration crisis, the economic productivity crisis, poor management and governance, water pollution, and so on."

Sakwa pointed out that the tension among the British public remains high, and many of the country's current problems have existed during the Conservative Party's rule. He mentioned that within a relatively short period from 2016 to 2024, the UK has had four prime ministers, all from the Conservative Party. He believes that the achievements of these Conservative prime ministers have been cutting funds in many areas, reducing staff in police and prison systems, and so on.

This British professor believes that the Labour Party still has a chance to turn around the situation in the UK, but he also noticed the rising support for new movements and new political parties, such as the right-wing populist party "Reform UK" led by Nigel Farage, and the far-left movement "Your Party" led by Jeremy Corbyn. The expert also pointed out that the UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, also has political potential and could have a chance to compete for the position of UK Prime Minister in the future.
