Media: India May Double Imports of American Energy by 2025
According to The Hindu Business Line, citing government sources in the country, India may double its purchases of American energy this year due to rising demand from Indian Oil Corporation and current geopolitical and tariff turbulence around the world.
It was reported that after U.S. President Trump began imposing high tariffs and encouraged countries with trade surpluses with the United States to increase their imports of American energy, India increased its purchases of American oil in 2025.
The report quoted sources as saying, "The total annual import value of crude oil, fuel, and liquefied natural gas from the United States exceeds $10 billion. Considering the growing demand for American fuel from the Indian Oil Corporation and the current geopolitical and tariff turmoil caused by the Trump administration, it is possible to double the import of American energy."
Since the beginning of the year, India's average daily crude oil imports from the United States have been 277,000 barrels, which is the third largest record following 415,000 barrels per day in 2021 and 300,000 barrels per day in 2022. According to data from Kpler Analytics, India's average daily import of American oil reached a record high of 466,000 barrels in April 2025.
The article pointed out, "Kpler Analytics predicts that the import volume in May will be around 370,000 barrels per day, although it is still early to make an assessment. In March, India's daily import of American oil was 289,000 barrels, down 61% from April."
A senior official at an Indian state-owned oil processing company said that liquefied natural gas used for cooking in India also has great potential in trade with the United States.
"Over 60% of the liquefied natural gas used in India is imported, and the proportion from the United States is very small. Most of the liquefied natural gas is imported from the Middle East. China's retaliatory tariff of 125% on U.S. goods has opened up the U.S. liquefied natural gas market for India," the official said.
