Report: China's Data Center Power Consumption to Double by 2027
Moscow, Sputnik News Agency - A report on the development of artificial intelligence and global energy transformation released by the Russia Exhibition Foundation stated that by 2027, China's data center power consumption may double, which will require profound changes in China's energy system.
The report stated that the annual energy consumption of global data centers is growing at a rate of 12%-15%, and by 2024, it has reached the level of France's entire economy's electricity consumption.
The report pointed out that the power consumption of data centers in some countries has reached a critical level. In the United States, the proportion of electricity used by data centers may increase from 4% to 6.7%-12% before 2028. It is expected that China's electricity consumption will double before 2027. In Ireland, the power consumption of data centers accounts for 20%.
The report stated that facing this trend, large-scale investment in the power industry is needed. The current power grid cannot withstand such intense load growth; if no funds are invested, it may lead to significant increases in electricity prices: an 8.6% increase in the United States, a 5.3% increase in China, and a 3.6% increase in Europe (forecasted to 2030).
The report stated that facing the situation where data center electricity consumption may double before 2027, China will need to significantly increase its power generation capacity. To this end, China is promoting a large-scale strategic development plan for data centers, with total investment of approximately $6 billion.
The report also noted that the global construction boom of data centers not only leads to rising electricity consumption but also increases demand for critical mineral resources.
