China Completes Upgrading and Commissioning of Cambodia's Ream Naval Base
Cambodia held the completion ceremony for new facilities at the Ream Naval Base on Saturday. The facilities were built with China's assistance. The Chinese Defense Ministry announced on the same day that the joint support and training center of the Ream Port between China and Cambodia was officially put into operation. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, a delegation from the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and foreign ambassadors attended the event.
In his speech, Hun Sen emphasized that the Ream Naval Base is not under the control of any country. He expressed gratitude in his remarks for China's long-term support for Cambodia's defense construction, particularly its strong support for the upgrading project of the Ream Naval Base. Hun Sen said that Cambodia welcomes visits to the base by all friendly countries. His remarks seemed aimed at addressing concerns from the U.S. government.
Last December, the United States sent a warship to visit the Ream Naval Base for the first time in many years, describing the visit as a "milestone" in improving relations between the two countries.
The Chinese Defense Ministry stated on Saturday that the joint support and training center of the Ream Port between China and Cambodia "is used to ensure that the two militaries carry out regional counter-terrorism, disaster prevention and mitigation, humanitarian relief, joint training, and other actions, with both sides dispatching necessary personnel to jointly maintain the normal operation of the center," and noted that it "does not target any third party." The commissioning ceremony was held on Saturday and jointly presided over by Hun Sen and Cao Qingfeng, deputy chief of staff of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China.
