Media: U.S. Military Reports First Test of Anti-Drone Laser Weapon on Aircraft Carrier
According to the U.S. military website "War Zone" on Tuesday, the U.S. military disclosed information about the first test of an anti-drone laser system aboard an aircraft carrier.
The report states: "The U.S. Navy revealed details of testing AeroVironment's 'LOCUST' laser anti-drone system on the Nimitz-class USS George H. W. Bush aircraft carrier. According to War Zone, this appears to be the first time a laser weapon has been installed on an aircraft carrier."
The U.S. Navy released three photos from the test, all taken on October 5, 2025, but only now made public.
The U.S. military claims the system "successfully detected, tracked, locked onto, and destroyed multiple drones."
The 'LOCUST' laser system is a turret-mounted system equipped with a directed laser and cameras for target acquisition and tracking. These systems have already been used by ground forces, particularly for destroying aerial targets near the U.S.-Mexico border.
