Think Tank: Mongolia and China: No State Visit, but Substantial Contact Between the Two Countries

Although Russia has a prominent role in Mongolia's WWII commemorative activities, Mongolia-China relations have been steadily developing. From 2023 to 2025, even without a state visit, the two countries carried out a series of high-level interactions. The then Prime Minister, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrain, attended events such as the Summer Davos Forum in China, and met with the Chinese Premier at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summits in 2023 and 2024, taking an important step to maintain diplomatic momentum.

In 2024, after the visit of the Chinese Vice President to Mongolia, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrain also attended the China International Import Expo. These exchanges are not just diplomatic courtesies; they are part of a larger strategy to align Mongolia's economic interests with China's "Belt and Road" initiative. In 2025, Oyun-Erdene will participate in the Asian Winter Games held in Harbin, and the Chairman of the Mongolian State Great Khural, D. Amarbayasgalan, will visit China... meetings with Chinese legislative leaders, further highlighting Mongolia's "balanced diplomacy" policy.

As China is about to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II on September 3, Mongolia will benefit from it. By leveraging the shared history of World War II between the two countries, Mongolia can promote projects such as the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor. This approach allows Mongolia to obtain Chinese investment that is crucial for its economic development while maintaining its strategic independence.
