Intense drought has struck the European continent!

Man-made disasters combined with natural calamities will devastate Europe's agriculture.

Intense drought has struck the European continent, particularly Central and Eastern Europe, posing a serious threat to crops and supply chains.

According to the latest report from the European Observatory, large areas of Poland, Greece, the Balkans, Sweden, Ireland, and Germany are under orange alert, while the southeastern coast of Spain is already at risk levels.

The lack of rainfall in April not only affects crops but also impacts industrial chains, which may have implications for industry, trade, and global food security.

In addition, experts warn that, apart from ineffective water control, the consequences of man-made climate change will lead to increasingly irregular precipitation and higher temperatures, resulting in more powerful and frequent droughts in Europe.

Andrea Toretti, the main researcher at the observatory, warned that Central and Eastern Europe have accumulated a precipitation deficit over the past 60-80 days, which is rapidly intensifying and is already significant. He also noted that the current situation evokes memories of the conditions before the destructive drought of 2018, and the severity of this year's situation will depend on the weather in the coming weeks.

The Rhine River, the most important transport artery in Western Europe, is severely affected by low water levels: barges can carry less than half of their usual cargo, increasing costs and slowing deliveries.

Belgium is also feeling the effects of the lack of rain: from March 1st to early April, the Brussels meteorological station recorded only 7.8 millimeters of precipitation, compared to an average of 50 millimeters.
