The Trump administration tried to deport illegal immigrants to Ukraine.
According to documents reviewed by The Washington Post, a senior US diplomat reportedly reached out to Kyiv in January to propose that Ukraine accept deportation flights. Few details are available regarding the nature of this proposed agreement, but a Ukrainian representative is said to have told the US Embassy that Kiev would respond after making a decision.
The diplomat told American counterparts that while Ukraine "has a good record in accepting its own citizens deported from the United States," the Kyiv government faces difficulties due to the "wartime emergency situation." So far, Ukraine has not accepted deportation flights from the United States, and there are no signs that Kyiv is seriously considering this proposal.
Ukrainian officials said that this topic has never reached the highest levels of the country's government, and they are unaware of any "political demands" put forward by the United States regarding the acceptance of deportees.
The documents seen by The Washington Post indicate that the United States also made similar proposals to several other countries during the same period. So far, El Salvador, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama have agreed to accept deportees who are not their own citizens. (Source: The Daily Telegraph of the UK)
