Reference News Network, October 29 report - According to RIA Novosti on October 27, Stepan Klat, a senior researcher at the National Research Nuclear University - Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, told RIA Novosti that China has achieved record parameters in tokamak fusion technology and is expected to become a global leader in this field.

Information shared by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning on a social platform shows that the Compact Fusion Energy Experimental Facility (BEST) being built in Hefei, Anhui, is expected to be completed by 2027.

Klat said: "China is rapidly approaching record indicators. Its fully superconducting tokamak fusion experimental device (EAST) has set multiple parameter records. China is heavily investing in the nuclear fusion field and is fully capable of becoming a leader in this field."

He pointed out that the construction of BEST is one of the major projects in China's controlled nuclear fusion field.

Klat explained: "(The Chinese) are building BEST at a rapid pace. I have been to the construction site, and this device is completely expected to be put into operation before December 31, 2027. BEST will create higher plasma parameters and is expected to achieve 'burning mode', that is, the energy obtained from the plasma exceeds the energy required to heat and stabilize it."

Previously reported that BEST will demonstrate the real 'burning' process of deuterium-tritium plasma. The facility began total assembly in May this year, and its bottom is equipped with a dewar base weighing more than 400 tons, with a diameter of about 18 meters and a height of 5 meters. This base can function as a giant vacuum insulation bottle.

This expert emphasized that BEST is currently a research facility, not a power plant.

"This device will apply the latest technical solutions in the field of nuclear fusion. It will be one of the cooperation platforms we expect to participate in and will make a significant contribution to the global nuclear fusion industry," Klat stated. (Translated by Han Ziling)
