U.S. Secretary of State: Multiple Countries Commit to Investing in the U.S. to Protect the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that several Gulf states have pledged investments in the United States in exchange for Washington ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Rubio told reporters: "The United States will continue to do everything possible to protect international shipping, but other nations also need to step up and contribute resources or funding to share this burden. Protecting global shipping is not America’s permanent responsibility. Some countries have already made such investment commitments, and others will make them in the future."
The U.S. Secretary of State further emphasized that countries in the region "need the opportunity to profit from such investments; otherwise, if their oil and gas cannot enter the market, they simply cannot do so."
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said the U.S. hopes to control the Strait of Hormuz and impose a 20% fee on cargo transport through the strait as compensation for providing "security guarantees" for navigation.
Subsequently, he announced on the social media platform TruthSocial that he had abandoned the idea of charging ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, instead opting to support trade and investment agreements with Gulf states.
