On August 8, the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that a high-power superlattice klystron in P-band had been successfully developed and passed all tests for acceptance. This is the world's first high-power superlattice klystron in P-band, marking a key leap from dependence on imports to independent innovation in China's accelerator high-power core RF device field.

The high-power P-band klystron is the core component of the linear accelerator of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). It provides powerful energy and power for the particle beam in the CSNS linear accelerator, just like the engine of a car. In the past, this advanced component was completely dependent on foreign imports.

Since 2021, the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has taken the lead, working jointly with several units including the University of Electronic Science and Technology and Guolipower Electronics Co., Ltd. of Kunshan, to carry out the research and development of the P-band 324 MHz klystron. During the research process, the scientific researchers boldly innovated, applying the frontier superlattice material technology to the design of this large-scale klystron for the first time internationally.

This innovation brought revolutionary changes. "The new klystron we have developed has a cavity structure volume approximately 50% smaller than similar devices abroad while reaching international advanced technical indicators. This not only reduces costs but also promotes a qualitative leap in the technology of high-power P-band klystrons, with broad application prospects in large scientific facilities, medical care, and other industrial fields," said Wang Sheng, deputy director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief commander of the Phase II project of the China Spallation Neutron Source.

It is reported that in recent years, the China Spallation Neutron Source has continuously enhanced its independent innovation capabilities, achieving full self-control over key accelerator core equipment, which has also driven technological progress in related domestic industries. (Chenguan Lu)
