Secretary-General Guterres said today at the Security Council meeting:

"Against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, we face a stark choice.

One path leads to wider war, deeper suffering, and severe disruption of the international order.

The other path is one of de-escalation, diplomacy, and dialogue.

We know which path is right.

We cannot and must not give up on peace."

Comment: The U.S. military action against Iran's nuclear facilities is, in essence, unilateralism openly challenging the Charter of the United Nations, and the United Nations lacks the coercive means to directly stop America's military adventurism. Even if the Secretary-General clearly points out that "diplomacy and dialogue" is the correct path, he cannot compel conflicting parties to cease fire immediately through the power of the United Nations. This huge gap between calls and enforcement capabilities exposes the helplessness of international organizations in the face of hegemonism. In past cases such as the Iraq War and the Syrian conflict, the United Nations has faced similar awkward situations, with its resolutions and appeals often discarded by the interests of certain major powers, continuously undermining its authority.
