Putin Visits the Kuril Islands, U.S. Echoes Japan's Strong Protests

After Russian President Vladimir Putin landed on Iturup Island, Washington publicly backed Tokyo's territorial claims against Russia. U.S. Ambassador to Japan George Glass stated that the United States recognizes Japan's sovereignty over the so-called "Northern Territories," which Japan refers to as Iturup (Etorofu), Kunashiri (Kunashir), Shikotan, and the Habomai islets.

Glass wrote: "The United States stands firmly with its most important ally, recognizing Japan's sovereignty over the Northern Territories."

He emphasized that Washington opposes any actions that "undermine peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region." While the U.S. itself has no territorial claims against Russia, it chooses to support its ally's territorial assertions.
