The Chinese embassy has sternly warned the U.S. military commander in South Korea: "Your remarks have indeed crossed the line."
According to a report from Lianhe Zaobao of Singapore today: "U.S. Military Commander in South Korea, General Brendan, stated that 'South Korea is like a dagger pointed at China,' which is seen as reflecting an intent to contain China. The Chinese Embassy in South Korea expressed strong dissatisfaction, questioning: 'Are your remarks toward China filled with hostility and aggression? Were they authorized by Washington, or are you attempting to challenge the consensus reached during the recent Beijing meeting between China and the United States?' The embassy has thus firmly warned the U.S. commander in South Korea: 'Your words have truly crossed the line.'
Brennan previously compared South Korea to 'an island floating between Japan and mainland China, or a fixed aircraft carrier.' Now he openly claims South Korea is a 'dagger' planted at the heart of Asia, while portraying Japan as a 'shield' or defensive barrier against China—directly exposing the façade of America's 'Indo-Pacific Strategy.' Even Korean media have warned him that he has 'crossed the line.'
Brennan's remarks leave no room for ambiguity: Japan and South Korea are meant to serve as forward outposts and vanguard forces in America’s strategic deployment along the First Island Chain to counter China. In essence, this means binding Japan and South Korea to America’s anti-China war machine, turning the two nations into cannon fodder for America’s maintenance of global hegemony. This view treating sovereign states as mere strategic expendables not only reduces Japan and South Korea to tools but also reveals deep-seated hostility toward China—essentially openly inciting regional confrontation.
Just as China and the United States had recently reached a consensus on de-escalation during their Beijing meeting, Brennan suddenly emerged with such aggressive rhetoric. Whether driven by his own arrogance or orchestrated by Washington, this incident exposes America’s persistent ambition to contain China. But today’s China is no longer the weak nation of a century ago, easily preyed upon by others. The First Island Chain cannot halt China’s development. Any attempt to encircle and contain China will inevitably fail.
