Trump says overall tariffs on China will be reduced to 47%

After the meeting, Trump told reporters on board Air Force One as he returned to the US that he would lower the tariffs imposed on China earlier this year due to fentanyl issues, from 20% to 10%. This will reduce the overall tariff rate on Chinese goods imported into the US from approximately 57% to 47%.

Trump said to journalists on the plane, "We have reached agreement on many very important points, and we will provide you with a briefing on the results of the talks later. You know, we discussed so much because there are a lot of things involved, and many of them are very important. We have reached consensus in many areas. A large amount of soybeans and other agricultural products will immediately start purchasing. You may have noticed that China has started to purchase a large amount of soybeans and other things, do you know? I appreciate this. It's a very good gesture."

Trump added, "Regarding fentanyl, we agreed that he will do his best to prevent fentanyl from entering (the US). You know, it's a very complex issue because it has many different uses, including anesthesia, etc., but he will make great efforts to stop the precursors of fentanyl. I think you will see some concrete measures. As you know, I imposed a 20% tariff on China because fentanyl is flowing into the US in large quantities, which is a fairly high tariff. According to his statement today, I have lowered this tariff rate by 10%."

Trump continued, "Therefore, the current tariff rate will be adjusted to 10% instead of (the previous) 20%. I believe he will make every effort to stop death from entering (the US). However, the situation is complicated because of the nature of fentanyl and its (drug) effects. So I think you will see a big difference."

When asked by reporters, "What are the main obstacles remaining to overcome? Do you think how long it will take to sign a trade agreement with China?" Trump replied, "I think it will be soon; we don't have many major obstacles left. We have reached an agreement on rare earths. We renegotiate this agreement every year, but I think this agreement will last for a long time, longer than a year. We will negotiate at the end of the year, but all the rare earth issues have been resolved."

Trump added, "I think you can say that this is indeed a global issue, not just an American one. So, we continue to produce and purchase rare earths and everything else. You know, when you look from other countries, you will find that the obstacle no longer exists. There are absolutely no obstacles in the rare earth sector. I hope the word 'rare earth' can temporarily disappear from our vocabulary."

When asked if this was the Chinese announcement of suspending the policy for a year, Trump said, "This is a one-year agreement. After a year, we will renew it as usual. I think, over time, this one-year agreement will be renewed frequently."

Trump mentioned, "I will go to China in April next year, and then they will come here (the US), whether it's in Palm Beach, Florida or Washington, D.C."
