Former Venezuelan President Maduro's First Post from Prison Expresses Gratitude to Supporters

AFP, Caracas, 28th — Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who were apprehended by U.S. forces and sent to New York for trial in January this year, have made their first public statement from prison via social media accounts, thanking their supporters and expressing that both remain resolute and calm.

Nicolas Maduro, 63, and Cilia Flores have been detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn for nearly three months since their arrest. According to reports, neither has had access to the internet or newspapers or any outside information to date.

Yesterday, a post was published on Maduro’s social media account X stating: “We are all right, steadfast, peaceful, and continuing to pray.” It remains unclear who authored the message.

The post reads: “We have received your letters, messages, emails, and prayers. Every word of love, every gesture of care, and every expression of support fills our hearts and strengthens us. We deeply admire our people for showing love, awareness, and unity during these difficult times—not only in Venezuela, but also overseas.”

A source told AFP that Maduro has frequently read the Bible during his detention, and some fellow inmates still refer to him as “President”.

The federal prison where Maduro is held has been described as having conditions “revolting” and “horrific,” notorious for its filthy environment, chronic understaffing, frequent incidents of violence within the facility, and regular power outages.

The source noted that Maduro is only permitted to contact family members and lawyers by phone, with each call limited to no more than 15 minutes.

Nicolas Maduro Guerra, Maduro’s son, has publicly stated that his father is in good health, emotionally calm, and even continues exercising while imprisoned.
