Japan to Deploy New Missiles to Provide Regional Deterrence Capabilities.
According to Japanese media reports, the first deployment destination of Japan's new missile is Shizuoka Prefecture, followed by Hokkaido and Kagoshima Prefecture.
On August 29, 2025, the Defense Equipment Agency released a video showing the test status of the new missile "High-Speed Glide Missile for Island Defense" planned for deployment by the Ground Self-Defense Force.
The High-Speed Glide Missile for Island Defense is a long-range missile planned to be deployed to the Ground Self-Defense Force from fiscal year 2026. When launched from a ground launcher, it ascends to high altitude using a booster, where the warhead separates. After that, the warhead glides at supersonic speed like a glider, breaking through enemy air defense systems and destroying targets hundreds of kilometers away. Due to its flight speed and range, it is sometimes described as a "ballistic missile" in some reports.
This video released was the second launch test conducted in California on the U.S. mainland from June to August, and it is reported that all launch tests were successfully completed, with development completed this fiscal year (2025).
The Ministry of Defense has announced that it will deploy the High-Speed Glide Missile for Island Defense to the Special Forces Training Unit at the Fujisaki Garrison (Shizuoka Prefecture) within this fiscal year, and will begin actual operations with this unit before the end of the same fiscal year.
Additionally, it is reported that a new unit is planned to be established and deployed next year (2026), operating the High-Speed Glide Missile for island defense at the Kita-Furano Garrison (Hokkaido) and the Enojo Garrison (Miyazaki Prefecture).
