According to Reuters, on the evening of August 11 local time, an explosion occurred at a factory of U.S. Steel near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Officials stated that the explosion resulted in at least one death, ten injuries, and one person missing.
According to U.S. Steel, the Clairton Plant is the largest coking plant in the United States, employing approximately 1,300 workers, producing about 4.3 million tons of coke annually. The plant had previously experienced fatal explosions in 2009 and 2010.

It was reported that the explosion occurred before 11 a.m. Eastern Time on the 11th. Initially, it was reported that two people were missing. Police from Allegheny County, where the coking plant is located, said at a press conference in the afternoon of the same day that one person was found and taken to a local hospital, while another person was still missing.
David Burritt, President and CEO of U.S. Steel, stated in a statement that the company is cooperating with local authorities to investigate the cause of the accident.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on social media that multiple explosions occurred at the plant that day, and the state government has contacted local officials. Injured employees have been taken to local hospitals for treatment. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
Sara Innamorato, the Administrator of Allegheny County, pointed out at a press conference that although air quality monitors did not detect a dangerous increase in sulfur dioxide levels after the explosion, residents within one mile (1.61 kilometers) of the coking plant are still advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, set the air conditioning system to recirculation, and avoid activities that involve inhaling outdoor air.
It is understood that in June this year, Japan Steel Works completed the acquisition of U.S. Steel, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. This transaction took 18 months to receive approval from the U.S. government.
