South Korean media: China has ranked first in three key shipbuilding indicators for 16 consecutive years!

On March 5, South Korean media 'JoongAng Ilbo' published an article stating that last year, China's shipbuilding industry ranked first globally in three key indicators: construction volume, order volume, and order backlog.

Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China showed that last year, China's shipbuilding output reached 53.69 million deadweight tons (DWT), an increase of 11% compared to the previous year. This accounted for 56.1% of the world's total shipbuilding output.

New ship orders reached 107.82 million deadweight tons, accounting for 69.0% of the global market share.

As of the end of last year, the order backlog was 274.42 million deadweight tons, an increase of 31.5% compared to the previous year, accounting for 66.8% of the global shipbuilding market.

China has maintained its leading position globally in the three key shipbuilding indicators for 16 consecutive years.

Last year, China took measures to enhance its industrial competitiveness by merging two state-owned shipbuilding companies - China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. (CSSC) and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) - to create the world's largest single shipbuilding group.

Deadweight tons is a unit measuring the cargo capacity of ships, and it is the benchmark for China's shipbuilding industry, especially for large but structurally simple vessels such as bulk carriers and oil tankers.

In contrast, South Korea focuses on high-value-added ships such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and large container ships, and uses compensated gross tonnage (CGT) as the benchmark.
