US Treasury Secretary Becerra Says US-China "Have the Conditions to Initially Reach an Agreement"

Reuters reported on Saturday (August 2) that US Treasury Secretary Becerra said on Friday that he believes Washington has "initially met the conditions to reach an agreement" with China, and he expressed "optimism" about the future negotiation process.

According to Reuters, Becerra posted on the X platform on Friday, saying, "The negotiations held this week in Stockholm have advanced our discussions with China, and I believe we have the basic conditions for a deal that would benefit both countries." The post was later deleted.

Becerra added, "I am optimistic about the prospects for the upcoming negotiations."

A spokesperson for the US Treasury explained that the post was being republished due to an error loading the image and noted that the wording of the post was consistent with Becerra's statements to multiple media outlets this week.

Becerra also stated during an interview with the American financial media CNBC on Thursday that the US believes it is "likely to reach a trade agreement" with China, but it is currently "not yet fully finalized."

He revealed that during the two-day talks held in Stockholm this week, the US clearly expressed its opposition on several issues.

According to the preliminary agreement reached between the US and China in May and June, both sides are working to end the mutual imposition of tariffs and China's restrictions on rare earth exports. According to the current schedule, China needs to reach an agreement with the Trump administration on long-term tariff arrangements by August 12.
