Korean Media: China has 5 universities in the top 40 globally, and none in South Korea!
November 7, Korean media "Global Economy" published an article stating that while countries around the world compete to cultivate top talents, Chinese universities are rapidly enhancing their competitiveness. According to the "2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings" released by the UK-based university ranking organization Times Higher Education (THE), China has 5 universities in the global top 40, an increase of 2 from last year's 3, setting a new historical record. A total of 35 Chinese universities entered the top 500. In addition, 18 Chinese universities achieved their highest rankings ever, which proves the rapid progress of China's higher education compared to other countries.
Tsinghua University has maintained the 12th position for the third consecutive year, consolidating its position as one of Asia's top universities. Peking University followed closely, maintaining the 13th position. A representative from Times Higher Education explained, "China's growth is attributed to the improvement in research influence and excellence, as well as the increasing proportion of doctoral degrees granted to faculty members."
This year, Japan, which won both the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has 115 universities in the top 1000 rankings. The University of Tokyo ranked 26th, up 2 places from last year, reaching its highest ranking ever.
South Korea, however, has no universities in the top 40. Seoul National University ranked 58th in this evaluation, continuing its ten-year reign as the top university in South Korea, following its 62nd place last year.
At the same time, American universities have seen a relative decline in rankings. Only 102 American universities made it into the top 500, a new low, with 25 universities achieving their lowest rankings ever. However, American universities still occupied seven of the top ten, salvaging some face.
Oxford University in the UK has remained at the top for ten years straight, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States has maintained the second position. Harvard University dropped two places, sharing the fifth position, while Princeton University and the University of Cambridge tied for the third position.
