Reference News Network, September 24 report - According to the South China Morning Post website on September 23, Brazilian President Lula met with TikTok CEO Zhao Shouzhi on the 22nd to discuss a plan to invest $1 billion in building a data center in Brazil.
This meeting was held at the residence of Brazil's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, highlighting the importance of technology and digital policy in Lula's international agenda.
Brazilian officials estimate that TikTok's investment could reach $1.029 billion, making this data center one of the largest technology infrastructure projects ever announced in Brazil.
TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has been negotiating since April to build a super-large data center complex in Ceara State in northeastern Brazil. The state is highly attractive for the data center industry because it has abundant renewable energy, especially wind power, as well as undersea internet cables.
These cables are key links for transmitting data between South America, North America, Europe, and Africa, making Ceara State a natural hub for digital infrastructure.
Alexandre Silveira, the Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, told reporters last week that he was "very confident" that Ceara State would receive "good news" about the plan, and called the negotiations "progressing smoothly." (Translated by Xu Yanhong)
