Airbus A320 replaces Boeing 737 as the best-selling aircraft in the world

According to data from Boeing and Airbus, the European Airbus A320 (introduced in 1988) has replaced the narrow-body Boeing 737 (the first of which was delivered in 1968) as the best-selling aircraft in the world as of September this year.

On Tuesday, American aircraft manufacturer Boeing announced on its website that it delivered 55 aircraft in September, including 40 Boeing 737 MAX planes (the latest version of the 737 series), making the total number of deliveries of the Boeing 737, including business versions since its launch, reach 12,254.

Additionally, according to data published by Airbus on October 8, as of the end of September, Airbus had delivered 12,257 A320 aircraft (including business versions).

Both Boeing and Airbus stated that these two series of aircraft have undergone significant updates since their first flight, especially in terms of engines and their components, to reduce fuel consumption and noise.

However, after two crashes of Boeing 737 MAX8 in 2018 and 2019, resulting in 346 deaths, the delivery of Boeing 737, especially to China, suddenly stopped for 20 months globally.

Additionally, after an accident involving a 737 MAX9 aircraft that caused some injuries, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a limit of no more than 38 aircraft per month starting in March 2024.

Airbus has been troubled by engine problems in recent years. In mid-July, Airbus was still reporting that "the A320 project continues to face engine supply issues."

Despite this, Boeing was happy to announce that it delivered the 2,000th Boeing 737 MAX aircraft since its launch in September. Ryanair, an Irish low-cost airline, received this aircraft, along with another nine aircraft.
