Netherlands Says UN Aviation Agency Ruled Russia Downed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17
The Dutch government said on Monday that the United Nations' aviation body ruled that Russia was responsible for the 2014 downing of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine, which killed all 298 passengers and crew aboard.
The statement said the International Civil Aviation Organization Council would consider what form compensation should take in the coming weeks.
On July 17, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine during intense fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces. In November 2022, Dutch judges found two Russian men and one Ukrainian man guilty of murder for their involvement in the attack in absentia. Moscow called the ruling "shocking" and said it would not extradite its citizens.
