The US and NATO have established a new mechanism to supply weapons needed by Ukraine, with Kyiv accusing Moscow of helping Pyongyang develop drones
While US President Trump was dissatisfied with Russia's continuous attacks on Ukraine, the transatlantic alliance has restarted cooperation on the Ukraine issue. According to Reuters, the US and NATO are developing a new plan to supply weapons to Ukraine, using funds from NATO countries to pay for the purchase or transfer of American weapons.
Trump said last month that the US would provide weapons to Ukraine, with the cost borne by European allies, but he did not specify how to implement this plan.
Reuters cited three informed sources who revealed that NATO countries, Ukraine, and the US are developing a new mechanism to supply American weapons to Ukraine based on the "Priority Ukraine Requirements List" (PURL).
Ukraine will list the priority order of required weapons, with each batch worth about 500 million dollars, and NATO countries will internally negotiate under the coordination of Secretary General Rasmussen to decide who will donate weapons or pay for the procurement of weapons.
A European official who did not want to be named stated that NATO allies hope to provide 10 billion dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine through this approach. It is still unclear when they hope to deliver the weapons to Ukraine.
He said, "This is a starting point, and it is an ambitious goal we are striving to achieve. We are working towards this goal. We support this grand objective."
A senior NATO military official who did not want to be named said that this initiative is a voluntary action coordinated by NATO and encourages all allies to participate. The NATO official said that the new plan includes a NATO-managed account approved by the highest NATO military commander, allowing member states to deposit funds for purchasing weapons for Ukraine.
NATO has refused to comment on this; the White House, the US Department of Defense, and the Ukrainian embassy in the US have not responded to related inquiries.
Ukraine accuses Russia of helping North Korea develop drones
Another report by Reuters said that Ukraine accused Russia of providing "Shahed" attack drone technology to North Korea and assisting in the production of drones.
The report cited Yermak, the chief of staff to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who posted on social media platforms on Friday (August 1) stating, "We see Russia transferring 'Shahed-136' suicide drones to Pyongyang, helping them establish production lines, and engaging in missile development exchanges with them."
The Shahed-136 drone was developed by Iran and is also known as a suicide unmanned cruise missile.
