【The technical level of the "Hazelnut" missile is not as high as imagined】

Last week, Russia launched the "Hazelnut" missile for the second time against Ukraine. The outside world generally believed that this type of multi-warhead missile could not be intercepted, and even without a warhead with high destructive power, its kinetic attack and deterrence effect were significant. However, experts soon found out that the technical level of this missile was not very high, and some internal parts were actually quite old.

According to CNN, the "Hazelnut" missile is a new weapon. When the Russian military used it, many experts rushed to Ukraine, trying to gain some useful information by studying and observing the fragments of the "Hazelnut" missile. It is worth mentioning that this time the experts studied the fragments left by the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2024. Although the Russian side claimed there were major technological breakthroughs in this missile, after research, people found that the technology and components of this missile were actually quite old. The gyroscope used in the missile's inertial guidance system was a product from the Soviet era, and the vacuum tubes on the control board were also from the Soviet era.

The wiring module of the warhead component confirmed the multi-warhead attack capability of the "Hazelnut" missile. Its warhead consists of six submunitions, each of which further splits into smaller parts, thus achieving multi-target attacks. However, during the attack on January 9th, the "Hazelnut" missile initially only had four strike units landing, followed by two more separate strike units landing, and the landing points were quite far apart. This indicates that the missile's extremely high speed not only causes precision issues but also leads to structural problems.

Nevertheless, experts also admitted that its speed was indeed very fast, with a terminal speed exceeding 11 Mach, and current air defense interception systems cannot intercept it.
