On April 21st, a Minnesota man named David DeCook went to Arkansas Diamond Hole State Park with his family and found a diamond while picking up what he thought was shiny candy wrapper. The diamond weighs 3.81 carats. Experts estimate that the diamond could sell for at least thousands of dollars, up to nearly $20,000.

The place where he found this diamond is called "Crater of Diamonds State Park". After three days, DeCook registered the diamond he found with the park. He jokingly told his brother Derek, "Once you see what I've found, you'll go crazy!"

Both brothers are regular visitors to this park. Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro is one of the few parks in the world where visitors can freely search for treasures. Since its opening in 1906, tourists have taken away 75,000 diamonds.

DeCook and his brother had previously found diamonds, but none as large as this one. The park management announced that the diamond DeCook discovered is the "heaviest" one registered by visitors this year so far.

The "Arkansas Diamond" Facebook account said, "David DeCook from Stuartville, Minnesota, has just registered a 3.81-carat, brown, octahedral-shaped diamond he found at the Arkansas Diamond Hole State Park."

Waymon Cox, assistant superintendent of the park, said that finding gems is not just about luck. "In April, the park received over 12 inches of rain, and it was wet all month long. Many large diamonds are picked up from the ground. Heavy rains wash away the mud in this area, revealing the heavy rocks, minerals, and gems hidden beneath." The day before the DeCook family visited, the 37.5-hectare "treasure-hunting area" received an inch of rain.

DeCook named the newly found copper-colored gem after his dog, "Duke Diamond", which could be worth thousands of dollars. He hasn't decided yet how he will handle it.

The website "Naturally Colored", which provides a guide for purchasing brown diamonds, said that brown diamonds are less valuable than white ones. A 3-carat white diamond could cost $40,000, while a similarly sized brown diamond might only be worth $10,000. Ouros Jewelry Store says that the price of brown diamonds per carat ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. Therefore, the "Duke Diamond" could sell for a minimum of $3,810 and a maximum of $19,050.
