Notably, Secretary of State Rubio, who was once on Trump’s shortlist of potential Republican presidential candidates, is now deliberately avoiding any discussion about the 2028 election. In early July, the Associated Press cited aides to Rubio saying the secretary is willing to step aside if Vance decides to run.
