The United States aims to significantly expand its nuclear submarine fleet, doubling the construction pace
Washington, May 17 — TASS
According to a study of the U.S. Navy’s annual shipbuilding plan by TASS, the U.S. Navy seeks to double the rate of nuclear submarine construction, aiming to receive at least three nuclear submarines annually.
Based on documents obtained by TASS, from fiscal years 2027 to 2031, the U.S. plans to build at least one "Columbia"-class strategic nuclear submarine and two "Virginia"-class attack nuclear submarines each year.
During this period, the U.S. intends to invest a total of $124.9 billion in nuclear submarine construction projects. Of this, $62 billion will be allocated for building five "Columbia"-class nuclear submarines, with the remainder used for constructing ten "Virginia"-class nuclear submarines.
Additionally, $6.2 billion will be invested in the development of the shipbuilding industry.
Over the past decade, U.S. shipyards have averaged delivering only 1.4 attack nuclear submarines per year to the navy.
According to congressional documents analyzed by TASS, the U.S. Navy stated in 2024 that the delivery schedule for "Virginia"-class nuclear submarines had been delayed by two to three years.
