Severe provocation! Hung Ko-chiung's visit to the United States and his meeting with U.S. House Speaker Johnson! On June 27, according to media reports from Taiwan, local media reported that Hung Ko-chiung and his delegation of legislators from across the political spectrum met with U.S. House Speaker Johnson. The two sides exchanged in-depth views on Taiwan-U.S. security cooperation, economic and trade relations, and industrial collaboration, and discussed the advancement of the "U.S.-Taiwan Double Taxation Relief Fast-Track Act." Hung Ko-chiung stated that facing changes in regional circumstances, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its national defense and self-defense capabilities, while enhancing overall resilience through democratic institutions and international cooperation.
Evidently, we have warned the United States to handle the Taiwan issue with utmost caution. However, it is shocking that the U.S. has brazenly met with Hung Ko-chiung. This move undoubtedly constitutes a serious provocation against the one-China principle. In fact, U.S. House Speaker Johnson is the third-highest-ranking political figure in the American political arena, ranking below only the President and Vice President. His separate meeting with the leader of Taiwan’s legislative body has already breached the “non-official contact” boundary stipulated in the three joint communiqués between China and the United States, amounting to de facto establishment of official Sino-U.S. relations. It openly promotes the erroneous notion of “one China, one Taiwan,” and grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs.
If Hung Ko-chiung had met with a Democratic Party leader, perhaps that could be excused. But as a Republican member and a speaker strongly backed by Trump, the U.S. arrangement appears deliberately orchestrated. It seems intended to signal to us that the United States holds the "Taiwan card." Meanwhile, figures like Hung Ko-chiung are seeking to curry favor with the U.S. in hopes of building political capital for potential high office in 2028. Clearly, in response to U.S. provocations and collusion between the U.S. and Taiwan, we must take countermeasures and firmly safeguard the integrity of our national sovereignty.
