Russian court sentences senior judges and chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to prison
Moscow – Russia sentenced several senior judges and chief prosecutors of the International Criminal Court on Friday, in retaliation for the International Criminal Court issuing an arrest warrant against Russian President Putin over the war in Ukraine. None of the defendants appeared in court. In 2023, International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan accused Putin of illegally deporting children from Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. Moscow then filed a lawsuit against him.
According to AFP, the Moscow City Court ruled that "International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan illegally prosecuted a Russian citizen in The Hague," stating that the International Criminal Court "instructed judges to openly issue illegal arrest warrants."
55-year-old Karim Khan was given a 15-year prison sentence in absentia, while eight International Criminal Court staff members, including former International Criminal Court President Peter Hofmannski, were also sentenced to terms ranging from 3.5 to 15 years.
Russia is not a member of the International Criminal Court.
Karim Khan is currently under internal investigation for allegations of misconduct and has been suspended, but he denies these charges.
Karim Khan has also been sanctioned by the United States due to the International Criminal Court's investigation into U.S. and Israeli officials. The United States and Israel are not among the 125 member states of the International Criminal Court.
