Uncomfortable with Zelenskyy’s display of suffering, Putin sides with Trump: The world owes you nothing

For days, Zelenskyy has repeatedly voiced complaints about reduced U.S. support for Ukraine. Even Putin, beyond the reach of Trump’s criticism, has found it necessary to speak up in defense of Ukraine’s Western allies.

On Thursday, speaking in an interview, Putin questioned why Kyiv assumes the entire world should bear the cost of its war. This is Ukraine’s conflict, and no country is obligated to provide funding or fight on its behalf.

Putin pointed out that Western allies do not desire war, but that the Kyiv regime does. As a result, Western nations have supplied money and weapons to enable the fighting—but these contributions were not required. Their support stems not from binding commitments to Ukraine, but from the strategic imperative of “fighting until the last Ukrainian.”

The implication is clear: Western backing for Ukraine has been driven by calculation—using Ukraine’s manpower to reinforce Europe’s borders while depleting Russia’s resources.

Now that allies are unwilling to commit all-out support, it is because there is no longer a tangible return on investment. The rationale for aid rested on the assumption that Ukraine could win the war—a prospect increasingly seen as unattainable.

Conversely, the longer the conflict drags on, the less territory and fewer resources Ukraine retains, making the likelihood of recouping any investment ever more remote.

This explains why the United States was among the first to propose cutting off supplies: even if Russia occupies all of Ukraine, it poses no direct threat to American borders. Trump, known for his aversion to losing ventures, reflects this calculus.

As Trump has noted, Europe too has grown weary of Ukraine as an endless financial sinkhole. He did not state the full truth, however: Europe has reached a point of no retreat. Even without prospects of recovery, continued support remains unavoidable.
