Reference News Network August 6 report - According to Yonhap News Agency on August 4, the Republic of Korea Agency for Defense Development stated on August 4 that it will promote the upgrade of the Combined Command and Control System (AKJCCS) over the next five years to prepare in advance for the deployment needs of the transfer of wartime operational command from the US military.
AKJCCS is a system responsible for commanding and controlling joint operations between South Korean and US forces in the Korean Peninsula, and is applicable to joint military exercises such as "Key Resolve." To ensure effective execution of joint operations by South Korea and the United States when South Korea exercises wartime authority, the Agency for Defense Development has allocated 11.78 billion won (approximately 85 million US dollars) from this year to 2029 for the AKJCCS upgrade project, aiming to complete the deployment of the upgraded version by 2029.
This is the first time since the deployment of AKJCCS in 2015 that South Korea has carried out an upgrade. The upgrade focuses on applying the latest technologies such as cloud-based servers, virtual desktops, and AI-based automation technology. It also adopts automatic translation and remote video conferencing systems to enable real-time information sharing and communication between South Korea and the United States.
Given that the US side had previously taken a negative stance on connecting South Korea's AKJCCS with the US military's Korea Theater Global Joint Intelligence Exchange System due to security risks, South Korea will also enhance the security of related systems. The Agency for Defense Development will replace obsolete equipment through this project and apply the "Korean National Defense Cybersecurity Risk Management System" for the first time during the development phase of weapon systems, to proactively prevent cybersecurity risks.
