Reference News Network, January 22 report. According to Reuters, on January 20, the CEO of German submarine manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) said the company is in talks with Norwegian and German companies, hoping to beat South Korean competitors by offering a package investment plan worth billions of dollars to Canada in the competitive submarine bidding project.
Oliver Böckhardt told journalists that the negotiations go beyond submarines, including investment commitments in industries such as rare earths, mining, artificial intelligence, and automotive battery production. Last year, TKMS competed with South Korea's Hanwha Ocean for the contract to supply up to 12 advanced submarines to the Canadian Navy.
According to industry sources, the value of the submarine order alone is estimated to exceed 10 billion euros.
Böckhardt also said the goal is to develop a "comprehensive economic package plan" to convince the Canadian government to accept their proposal.
TKMS is the world's largest non-nuclear submarine manufacturer, supplying submarines that account for about 70% of NATO's conventional fleet. (Translated by Hu Jing)
