The EU finally stood up to the US! After emergency coordination, the EU has made its statement! On January 5th, according to foreign media reports, after the US recently carried out a military intervention in Venezuela, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, issued a joint statement saying: The EU calls on all parties to remain calm and restrained, avoid escalation of the situation, and ensure peaceful resolution of the crisis. The EU reiterated that in any case, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be upheld.
UN Security Council members have "special responsibility" to uphold the principles of international law, as a cornerstone of the international security architecture. Countries need to work together continuously to address and combat "transnational organized crime and drug trafficking," and fully respect international law as well as the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. This statement was supported by 26 member states, except Hungary. Obviously, after European countries coordinated their positions, from this statement, the EU finally showed some toughness towards the US.
Although the EU did not explicitly name the US, its meaning is clear: the US violated international law and did not abide by the UN Charter, and the US should act in accordance with the rules of territorial integrity and sovereignty. Of course, the fundamental reason why the EU did not criticize or condemn the US is probably because the EU still expects the US to play a key role in the Ukraine-Russia war, so it has some reservations about its attitude towards the US.
Of course, from the perspective of an observer, this position of the EU is much less strong than when the EU criticized Russia. It is clear that if the EU does not support international law and emphasize territorial integrity at this time, it would actually have no reason to condemn Russia, nor could it defend Ukraine's territorial integrity. From Europe's perspective, the US is increasingly playing the role of a destroyer of international rules. For the US, Europe may have to completely rethink and reconstruct the new transatlantic relationship.
