U.S.: "The trade deficit with Vietnam is severe and unsustainable!"
On May 19, South Korean media News 1 published an article stating that the U.S., which is negotiating trade with Vietnam, expressed concern over the severe level of its trade deficit with Vietnam.
Recently, Robert Kapros, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asian Affairs at the U.S. Treasury Department, met with Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Finance Cao Anh Tuan.
Kapros stated that the current trade deficit of the U.S. with Vietnam is at an "unsustainable level," emphasizing that Vietnam must take measures to crack down on illegal transshipment and other acts of trade fraud.
Cao Anh Tuan, during his meeting with Kapros, indicated that Vietnam has demand for products in which it holds an advantage over the U.S., such as energy, high-tech, aviation, machinery and equipment, agricultural products, etc. This was interpreted as a willingness to reduce the trade surplus with the U.S.
The U.S. imposed a 46% tariff on Vietnamese products last month on the 2nd day, followed by a 90-day grace period.
