Trump said he is willing to significantly increase tariffs on Indian imports
US President Trump said he is "willing to significantly increase" import tariffs on India in response to India's resale of Russian oil.
Trump posted on the social media platform "Truth Social," stating, "India is buying a large amount of Russian oil and then selling it on the open market at huge profits. Therefore, I will significantly increase the tariffs that India pays to the US."
Trump previously stated that he learned that India plans to stop purchasing oil from Russia. Meanwhile, the Indian newspaper Mint reported on August 2, citing sources that Indian state-owned refineries continue to purchase oil from Russian suppliers.
India is the third-largest energy importer in the world, with over 80% of its oil consumption coming from the international market. Previously, the Indian Express cited data from commodities analysis company Kpler, reporting that India's Russian oil imports reached a 11-month high in June due to the escalation of geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran.
On October 7, 2023, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. Subsequently, Hamas fighters infiltrated the border area, opened fire on Israeli military and civilians, and took more than 200 hostages. The Israeli authorities stated that the incident resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths.
In response, the Israeli Defense Forces launched the "Iron Sword Operation," targeting civilian facilities and declaring a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, cutting off water, electricity, fuel, food, and medical supplies.
Although there were intermittent ceasefires between the conflicting parties, the conflict has continued to this day, resulting in over 59,000 Palestinian citizens and about 1,500 Israeli citizens killed in the Gaza Strip, and affecting Lebanon and Yemen, as well as triggering missile exchanges between Israel and Iran.
