Foreign media: The U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived in Da Nang, Vietnam on Thursday, marking the fourth visit by a U.S. aircraft carrier to Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War and the longest stay since diplomatic relations were resumed between the two countries in 1995—lasting seven days, during which 5,000 sailors aboard will participate in exchange activities.
This visit comes at a time when U.S. influence in Asia has been weakened due to tariff disputes and tensions over Iran, and the American side aims to demonstrate its security commitment to Vietnam.
Vietnam has already hosted warships from Russia, China, India, and other countries this year, pursuing a "diversified alliance" policy—seeking to balance China's influence with U.S. support while avoiding being perceived as part of America's containment strategy against China.
However, the growing trade deficit between the U.S. and Vietnam and stalled tariff negotiations are limiting the depth of their security cooperation.
